What is enclomifene citrate?
Enclomifene citrate is a derivative of clomifene citrate and is considered a more modern, targeted, and better tolerated version than traditional clomifene. Clomiphene is, in fact, a mixture of two isomers: zuclomifene and enclomifene. Zuclomifene has a partial estrogenic action and is responsible for many undesirable side effects, while enclomifene citrate has a predominantly anti-estrogenic action.
Thanks to this selectivity, enclomifene citrate is more effective in supporting male hormone production while avoiding many of the side effects typical of clomifene.
Main action and benefits
Enclomifene citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). It works by blocking estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, interrupting estrogenic negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.
This mechanism leads to:
-
increased secretion of LH (luteinizing hormone)
-
increased secretion of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone)
-
direct stimulation of the testicles to produce endogenous testosterone and spermatozoa
Unlike testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), enclomifene citrate does not suppress natural testosterone production, but stimulates it, reducing the risk of:
-
testicular atrophy
-
infertility
-
cholesterol changes
-
increase in hematocrit
Enclomifene citrate vs. clomifene
The main advantageof enclomifene citrate over clomifene lies in the absence of zuclomifene, which is responsible for many estrogenic and psycho-emotional side effects.
Key differences:
-
Enclomifene citrate has fewer side effects.
-
does not accumulate in the body for long periods of time
-
improves the hormonal profile in a cleaner way
-
does not negatively affect libido and mood
Studies have shown that zuclomifene can have harmful effects on the male reproductive system, including a reduction in Leydig cells and worsening of spermatogenesis, phenomena not observed with enclomifene citrate.
Male hypogonadism
Enclomifene citrate was developed as an alternative to testosterone for the treatmentof male hypogonadism, particularly secondary hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
Numerous clinical studies have shown that enclomifene citrate:
-
increases total testosterone levels
-
increases LH and FSH
-
preserves or improves sperm quality and quantity
-
maintains high testosterone levels even after discontinuation
This makes it particularly useful for men who want to improve their hormone levels without compromising fertility.
Use to increase testosterone
Thanks to its anti-estrogenic action, enclomifene citrate can be used not only in cases of low testosterone, but also to optimize hormone levels beyond average physiological values, with possible benefits for:
-
energy
-
post-workout recovery
-
mood
-
libido
-
physical and mental performance
During use, it is recommended to monitor:
-
estradiol
-
Sex hormone-binding globulin
An excessive increase in estrogen or SHBG can reduce the benefits of elevated testosterone and cause side effects; for this reason, periodic blood tests are often necessary.
Use in sports and PCT
Enclomifene citrate is sometimes used:
-
as a support for hormonal recovery
-
as a "soft" alternative to anabolic steroids
-
as a drug for post-cycle therapy (PCT)
After cycles of anabolic steroids, enclomifene citrate can help quickly restore endogenous testosterone production by stimulating the HPT axis, reducing the risk of muscle loss and decreased sexual function.
