Description of the drug

Aromasin is the trade namefor exemestane, a potent, non-steroidal, highly selective third-generation aromatase inhibitor (inactivator). This drug was originally developed as an antineoplastic agent and is widely used in the treatment of estrogen-dependent breast tumors.

In men,exemestane is used to reduce blood estrogen levels and promote an increase in endogenous testosterone and gonadotropin hormones. The mechanism is based on blocking the aromatase enzyme, which is responsible for converting testosterone into estrogen. Excess estrogen can, in fact, have negative effects on the central nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, reducing LH secretion and, consequently, testosterone production.

It is important to note that Aromasin (exemestane) does not directly lower already elevated estradiol levels, but rather prevents the formation of new estrogens, helping to stabilize hormonal balance.

Mechanism of action

Exemestane 25 mg belongs to the third generation of aromatase inhibitors. During the first oxidation cycle, the drug creates an irreversible covalent bond with the aromatase enzyme, leading to its selective inactivation.

This mechanism allows:

• a reduction in estrogen synthesis of up to 97%

• superior efficacy compared to other inhibitors such as anastrozole

• better tolerability and a lower incidence of side effects
