Old-school bodybuilders and those who’ve been around the block a few times surely already know what we’re talking about, but for the younger generation—or for those who’ve just entered this world—here’s a good overview of what has long been considered the absolute classic anabolic steroid cycle for building mass: testosterone, Deca, and Dbol—or, as it’s more commonly known, the “Bread and Butter” cycle.
The Bread and Butter Anabolic Cycle
In English, “bread and butter” literally means bread and butter, but in slang, something that’s “bread and butter” refers to something basic or standard (for example: “I’m a soccer player; using the ball is my daily bread and butter”). Without delving too far into the past, as recently as 10–15 years ago, steroid cycles—along with the available chemistry and knowledge—were much more limited. Even before all the various peptides, SARMs, and the like became trendy, cycles were fairly basic, and the hormones and molecules used were far fewer. The bread and butter was nothing more than the cycle that almost all bodybuilders did to build mass, and it simply consisted of a base of Testosterone Enanthate and Deca Durabolin. Since these were very long-acting esters, oral DBol (Dianabol) was added to kick-start the cycle—that is, to start seeing the effects of the cycle (from the DBol)—while the Test E and Deca took their time entering the bloodstream.
Cycle effectiveness
It’s no secret that testosterone and Deca work very well together: but are there better options available today? Certainly, there is much more choice these days, many more “supplements,” and much more development, but if something worked well in the past, it certainly still works well today. After all, human DNA hasn’t changed, and it’s no secret that bodybuilders still almost always use Test and Deca during the off-season.
If we’re nitpicking, perhaps, it’s clear today that starting with a highly toxic oral like DBol might be ill-advised; in fact, it’s not that DBol anticipates the effects of Test and Deca—rather, DBol provides its own effects while we wait for the two long-acting esters to take effect. In fact, you just need to wait a little longer, or you can also opt for faster-acting esters (which were hard to find back then) such as Test Propionate and Deca NPP.
Testosterone, Nandrolone, and Dianabol: here is the cycle
Without considering the possible variations in the cycle due to modern products, let’s simply describe the cycle itself as it was conceived and carried out in the past, using long-acting esters (to stabilize plasma hormone levels) and an oral compound to kickstart the process. The quantity of products and the length of the cycle clearly vary from person to person and depending on the desired results; to make this article as interesting as possible for everyone, let’s assume it lasts the classic average of 10 weeks and that the doses are low to moderate for a user on their first “bread and butter” cycle.
Weeks 1-10: 500mg Testosterone Enanthate per week
Weeks 1-10: 250mg Deca Durabolin per week
Weeks 1-4: 30mg Dbol per day (preferably before workout)
As for the cycle itself, here’s the gist: the testosterone dosage is double that of Deca to counteract the libido issues caused by Deca. Dbol is used only at the beginning as a kickstart, and frankly, it’s not necessary. Keep in mind that the more frequent the injections, the more stable the blood levels (even with long-acting esters) , and therefore the fewer problems related to aromatization.
Although this is considered a fairly basic cycle (a "bread-and-butter" cycle, as it were), all the steroids used in the cycle suppress natural testosterone production, so PCT (Post Cycle Therapy) is mandatory.
The PCT after Bread and Butter
As mentioned, post-cycle therapy is practically mandatory; otherwise, you’ll end up with no testosterone, you won’t be able to produce it naturally for a long time, you’ll feel terrible, and you’ll likely lose all the gains you’ve built up over the 10-week cycle.
In the past, you would have been prescribed the standard regimen of Nolvadex, HCG, and probably Clomid, at predetermined doses and intervals. Today, we recommend that you get a comprehensive blood test with a hormone panel, identify any values that are out of range, and decide what to take and how much based on those results.
